Timeless Designs

The concept of planning a project around a custom designed ‘Tall ship’ need to be fully evaluated to understand how the concept can deliver such a graceful cruising yacht with spacious decks and large interior volume, and at the same time be cost effective to run.

If developing the design alongside the experienced design office at Tradewind to suit your particular requirements sounds exciting, then the sense of satisfaction and achievement in creating such a vessel is breathtaking.

Designs can encompass yachts from thirty to one hundred meters, with rigs varying from Ketch, Schooner, Barques, and full riggers, all drawn from traditional styles of sail, but built to excating modern standards. The degree of modernization of materials and finish is personal, and all steel and deck fittings can be chosen or fabricated from galvanized for a completely traditional look or polished stainless steel more akin to a luxury yacht.

Tradewind designs can also be configured to match motor vessels in terms of both power and speed. Engines of between 300 and 3000 horsepower can be chosen and fitted into a Tradewind full displacement hull, offering similar speeds and power rangers to motor yachts.

classic style, modern convenience

The interest and growth in big modern sailing yachts is evident from the current activity in the world’s prime shipyards. In parallel, an owner who prefers extensive interior volumes may think that they have to seek a large motor yacht. The interesting concept of a Tradewind classic tall ship is that the benefits of large displacement volumes are combined with the outstanding grace of a clipper ship.

The result is a yacht that will dominate the skyline with its fine lines, need no more crew than a similar sized motor yacht - or indeed modern sailing yacht, and is sea kindly, extremely safe and economical. Modern yacht styling very often reduces the available deck space and interior volume of sailing yachts.

With the Tradewind approach, the enjoyment of a sailing yacht can be combined with vast areas of deck space fore tenders, toys and entertaining, normally only possible on a larger displacement motor yacht. Below, large spaces provide spacious accommodation, extensive areas for owners and guests, plus plenty of scope for the crew, who deserve support with ample accommodation space. Light displacement draft have become expensive to produce and run because systems have to be cleverly engineered behind panels underfloor and in barely accessible areas.

A Tradewind displacement hull has the room to fit a ll the systems you require – with the benefit of easier access and maintenance. As the interior of Baboon shows, the quality of fit out can be as exceptional as the space provided.
